Piton du Canot

Piton du Canot is a prominent peak on the southwestern border of Black River Gorges National Park with great views of Ilot Benitier, Tourelle du Tamarin, and Le Morne Brabant. The hike should not take more than two hours round trip along an easy to follow, well-worn trail. The last half is relatively steep, although mostly shaded.

Route:

  • Type of trail: Out and Back
  • Start point: Trailhead near Chamarel Restaraunt
  • End Point: Summit
  • Length: 1.6 miles round trip
  • Duration: 1-2 hours
  • Lowest point: 994ft
  • Highest point: 1751ft
  • Total elevation gain: 866ft

Park at the Chamarel Restaurant. Begin walking towards the fenced  in forestry station. There is a faint trail that goes around the building towards a road/driveway. The trail does not follow the road, instead continue along the wooden fence on your right/the west side. Follow this trail past two pavilion viewpoints. The peak will become visible ahead. The trail will pass along private property with a fence before it begins a steep climb towards the summit. There are a few steep, rocky sections that might require the use of your hands. There are a few frayed ropes if the trail is slippery. The trail is clear through this section and will bring you to the summit. Return along the same route.
