Montagne Deux Mamelles

Montagne Deux Mamelles has an east and a west summit. This page has route information for both, although the east route is recommended as it is clear and short. The route to the west summit is faint, overgrown, and difficult to follow.

East Route:

  • Type of trail: Out and Back
  • Start point: Sugarcane fields near Beau Bois
  • End Point: Summit
  • Length: 1.4 miles round trip
  • Duration: 1-1.5 hours
  • Lowest point: 1552ft
  • Highest point: 2093ft
  • Total elevation gain: 602ft

Turn off Beau Bois Road onto the road headed into the sugarcane fields (see photos). This road may be blocked with rocks for an unknown reason.  It is not a far walk if you park along the road. Take a look at the peaks. The west route climbs straight up the face and the east route starts on the far east side. Continue on this road, after a few hundred feet a forest will appear, turn right before this forest. There are quite a few roads that will take you to the same destination, which is the far right/east side of the mountain. Keep climbing on the roads aiming for this side. Eventually a trail will appear on your left/west (see photos). Follow this trail until you reach a saddle. At the saddle you will see a few spiky trees (see photos). The trail to the summit begins between these two trees, although it is not very clear at this point. Once inside the brush/trees the trail becomes clear – follow it to the summit. There does not appear to be a decent way to cross over to the west peak. Return along the same route.

West Route:

  • Type of trail: Out and Back
  • Start point: Sugarcane fields near Beau Bois
  • End Point: Summit
  • Length West: 1 mile round trip
  • Duration: 1-2 hours
  • Lowest point: 1524ft
  • Highest point: 2088ft
  • Total elevation gain: 699ft

There are many GPS tracks for this route and trails on OpenStreetMap, but they are all misleading. There is a trail from the summit that heads towards Malenga, but quickly fades. Many GPS tracks show people taking this trail and then being forced to return to the main trail. It is advisable that you stick to the route I have included for both directions. Additionally, I would not try and follow the GPS too closely – you will have to do quite a bit of route finding as the trail becomes unclear at many points and my GPS did not have good reception. My suggestion is to simply aim for the summit and find the best way possible.

Turn off Beau Bois Road onto the road headed into the sugarcane fields (see photos). This road may be blocked with rocks for an unknown reason. It is not a far walk if you park along the road. As you approach, take a look at the peaks. The west route climbs straight up the face and the east route starts on the far east side. Continue straight on this road until it ends. The trail begins straight ahead in the brush. It is relatively well defined in this first section, but will fade in and out as you continue. You will reach a more well defined trail. Cross it and continue straight ahead. The trail fades in and out – keep your eyes open and just try to find the best path forward while maintaining your direction. The trail becomes steep at various points, but is not overly physically challenging.

It does not appear easy to cross to the east peak from the summit. Return along the same route – do not be tempted by the marked/well defined route that turns off towards Malenga.
