Grand Riviere Sud Est

This section of Grand Riviere Sud Est is rugged with rapids pouring over black basaltic rock that culminates in a large waterfall where you can swim and jump off the rocks. It is typically reached by packing into a boat in the nearby town, going to the falls for long enough to take a picture, and then returning a little bit poorer. Hiking there gives a completely different experience, namely enjoyment. The hike is not very challenging as it merely follows the river down, although there are a couple of places where you cannot walk along the side of the river and will have to find your way amongst the trees and jumbled rocks. It is possible to start higher up the river as well.

If you need more information, a guide, or want to paddle up the river in a kayak, stop in at Otentic, which is just down the road.

Route:

  • Type of trail: Out and Back
  • Start point: Near bridge over GRSE
  • End Point: GRSE Waterfall
  • Length: .8 miles round trip
  • Duration: 1 hours
  • Lowest point: 35ft
  • Highest point: 147ft
  • Total elevation gain: 164ftft

On the north side of the river, just after the bridge, there is a small pull out where you can park. From there descend through the clearing/refuse towards the river. Go to the river bank and begin following it down. There will be a few points, which are obvious, where you cannot continue along the bank (this varies with water level). Find your way around and then stay close to the river. Once you reach the falls you can either jump off rocks of varying heights (see photos) or descend down to water level for a swim just below. The water level will probably vary here during the year, so use your best judgment and jump at your own risk. I drew a few diagrams showing where I jumped from (see photos). I jumped straight out off of the point shown in the pictures. Additionally, there are often locals here that can show you how it is done. Return along the same route.
