Corps de Garde

Corps de Garde cuts a striking and unmistakable form on the west side of the island. The trail provides panoramic views from the summit and from a south viewpoint. It is well worn and easy to follow. There is almost no shade on the route, so an early start would be a good idea.

Route:

  • Type of trail: Out and Back
  • Start point: Near Stanley/Camp Levieux Housing Estate
  • End Point: Summit/Viewpoint
  • Length: 2.8 miles round trip
  • Duration: 2-3 hours
  • Lowest point: 975ft
  • Highest point: 2382ft
  • Total elevation gain: 1768ft

The trailhead is on the south side of the road outside Stanley near a set of concrete power poles (see photos). There is some space here where you could park, or there is plenty of space just to the east. The trail is visible from the road and is well marked by white stones until it reaches the ridgeline. Follow this trail to the ridgeline.

At the ridgeline the trail turns south. There will be a clear track and flagging as the trail continues towards the summit. It passes around the backside of a rock outcropping and then continues steadily climbing until the summit (see photos).

After the summit the trail continues along the ridgeline of Corps de Garde. The views from the south viewpoint are worth the walk.  Along the way there are a few rocky sections that you can either climb over or take the trail which bypasses them to the west. Return along the same route.
