Cascade 500 Pieds

A short, steep hike to the lip of a waterfall cascading 500 feet towards the south coast. Also known as Cascade des Galets. The views on a clear day are the best around. The trail is easy to follow and is not too physically challenging other than a short – 30-45 minute – ascent back to Alexandra Falls. The trail is well- worn and partly shaded.

Route:

  • Type of trail: Out and Back
  • Start point: Alexandra Falls parking lot
  • End Point: Waterfall
  • Length: 1.8 miles round trip
  • Duration: 1-2 hours
  • Lowest point: 1767ft
  • Highest point: 2174ft

Begin walking towards Alexandra falls viewpoint. When you reach the concrete circle you will see a trail veering to your left/east – go in this direction. This trail should take you across both of the streams that feed the two falls visible from the viewpoint and shortly thereafter it will begin descending.

The descent is steep and can be slippery. You will reach the rushing stream that feeds the falls – hop across on rocks. The waterfall is just ahead. Be careful around the falls as the rocks are slicker than pig shit. Return along the same route.

I came across this site, when I was looking into Lava Tubes. I was born on the Island and was the greatest of adventurers, relatively, given my age. I left at 15, but went back to visit my parents a few times. I shall explore the various areas from the comfort of my study in the UK. I used to climb to the top of Le Pouce, and nothing was more exciting that exploring the woods with my uncle Roger Remi.
